Privacy

This is my personal website and I run it myself, so I’m responsible for any personal data it collects. If you have questions about anything on this page, email me.
In short: no cookies, no ads and no tracking across other sites. I count visits with statistics software that I run myself, and it doesn’t store your IP address.
Visit statistics
To see which pages people read, I use Umami, open-source statistics software running on my own server. When you open a page, your browser sends the server a short message with:
- the address and title of the page;
- the page that linked you here, if your browser shares it;
- your browser’s language setting.
From that request, the server also works out your browser, operating system and type of device, and your approximate location (never more precise than a city). It uses your IP address for the location lookup and to make an anonymous visitor number, which changes at least once a month. The statistics software doesn’t store the IP address itself.
I don’t try to identify anyone from these statistics, and I don’t combine them with anything else. I delete statistics older than one month. The legal basis for all this is my legitimate interest in knowing how the site is used (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR).
If you’d rather not be counted, the simplest way is to block umi.jamesanalytics.uk with a content blocker. Your browser then never contacts the statistics server, or Cloudflare (see below). You can also email me your IP address and I’ll exclude it, although this only works for as long as your address stays the same.
Other companies involved
Loading this site involves three other companies. Like any web server, each one sees your IP address when your browser contacts it:
- GitHub hosts this site and logs visitors’ IP addresses for security (privacy statement).
- jsDelivr, run by Volentio JSD Limited in the UK, delivers MathJax and Mermaid, two open-source libraries the pages use for maths and diagrams (privacy policy).
- Cloudflare passes traffic on to my statistics server (privacy policy).
GitHub and Cloudflare are US companies certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
What’s stored on your device
Nothing, unless you use the light/dark switch at the top of the page. Your choice is then saved in your browser so the site remembers it next time. It is never sent anywhere.
If you email me
I use your email address and message only to reply to you and deal with what you’ve asked.
Your rights
You can email me to ask what personal data I hold about you, or to ask me to correct or delete it. Because the statistics don’t contain anything that identifies you, I probably won’t be able to find your visits in them.
