About me

Hi! I’m James, welcome to my website. Here I will write a few things about myself you might find interesting.

Work

I work as a postdoctoral researcher at NTNU and am funded by an individual Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action, in addition to receiving funding from NTNU for teaching.

Research interests

I am a mathematican with a focus on numerical analysis and simulations. I like to built the underlying structure of a problem into my models whenever possible. My general areas of interest include:

• Finite element methods
• Scientific machine learning
• Iterative solvers (including geometric multigrid)
• Adaptive algorithms

I am currently working on:

• Coupling neural networks and finite element models
• Developing new finite element discretisations
• Developing our understanding of machine learning algorithms
• Simulating phase transitions in smectic-C liquid crystals
• Accelerating linear solvers

Personal interests

I’m happy when I’m active, I like to ski in the winter, hike in the summer and jog year round. I also enjoy (amateur) wildlife and landscape photography.
